How big should a QR code be?

Three numbers govern every placement: the scanning distance, the payload density, and the quiet zone. Get those right and a QR code is close to unkillable; get them wrong and no amount of design saves it.

Density changes everything

A QR code's grid grows with its content — from 21×21 modules (version 1) to 177×177 (version 40). At a fixed print size, more content means smaller squares. A 3 cm code holding a 20-character URL has ~1 mm modules (comfortable); the same 3 cm holding a 300-character vCard has ~0.4 mm modules (marginal). That is why shortening the content is the cheapest size upgrade: less data, chunkier squares, tougher code.

The quiet zone is part of the code

The 4-module clear border isn't decoration — scanners use it to find the code's edges. Designers crop it because it "wastes space"; then the code fails on any busy background. When you order print, treat the quiet zone as part of the artwork. Every export from this studio includes it.

Module size floors for printing

  • 0.5 mm+ — safe on any process, including cheap flyer runs and fabric.
  • 0.4 mm — fine for quality digital print; the studio warns below this.
  • 0.33 mm — laser-printer floor in good conditions; no margin for error.
  • GS1's retail spec allows down to 0.396 mm at point-of-sale, with high-grade printing.
